Over 2,000 years ago, Aristotle observed that virtue is formed through habit and habits are formed through repeated good choices. He used the analogy of learning to play a musical instrument: it takes practice – and practicing well – to become a skilled musician. Aristotle believed the same is true of virtue and becoming a person of good character.

He emphasized the importance of forming character early, writing:

“…It makes no small difference, then, whether we form habits of one kind or of another from our very youth; it makes a very great difference, or rather all the difference.” — Nicomachean Ethics, Book II, 1

Modern psychology agrees: repeated practice rewires the brain. Small choices made consistently over time begin forming habits that shape character and influence how we respond to challenges, relationships, and responsibilities.

That is why in the Order of the Dragon Slayers™, our dragons are not simply enemies to be destroyed. They are visual symbols to help young people recognize how their choices shape who they are becoming.

Through guidance, reflection, and practice, Dragon Slayers learn that struggles can be faced, habits can change, and character can be transformed one choice at a time.
